The GS Soil Portal provides easy access to soil and soil related metadata, maps, download services, web content and publications from the GS Soil Network. To help users, the portal provides a powerful search function, map viewer and additional information about the project, project results and data harmonisation. Everything available through the portal is made accessible from GS Soil Network partner’s own web sites and integrated in the portal.

GS Soil "Assessment and strategic development of INSPIRE compliant Geodata-Services for European Soil Data” is an eContentplus project. The project leader was the German Environmental Information Portal (PortalU) with an additional 33 partners from 18 countries participating in the project.

The GS Soil project aims to establish both a data-provider network and an IT infrastructure to improve and provide access to spatial soil data in Europe. In GS Soil 24 soil data providers participated with the goal to translate their local data into a common European framework, provided by the WRB classification, and make example data available through the portal during the project running time. The data provided range from European to national through to regional level. The IT infrastructure is mainly provided via open-source software and was tested by the data providers during the project.
